What is Control?

In the most direct sense, control is the ability to influence or direct people’s behavior or a course of events.  For most of us, our ego tells us we need to control and we have been conditioned to believe that we should.  However, control is an illusion. The illusion of control is a cognitive bias that leads us to believe we have the power over an outcome of a situation.  It can be described as a form of manipulation that our ego convinces us we are capable of.

The only control we have is over our own lives.  The things that we eat, who we surround ourselves with, our actions and reactions are within our control.  We do not have the power to control the behavior of others, life’s obstacles, tragedies, etc.  We all try so hard to make others’ lives better, and in doing so we attach ourselves to the outcome and are very often negatively affected when it doesn’t go to plan.  This is what we must identify, acknowledge, and allow ourselves to let go of the relentless grip we have.

Although we can not determine what life will throw our way, we do have control over our actions and reactions. In this article, we will explore how to create a strong internal foundation that can withstand life’s earthquakes. Recognizing the importance of rebuilding on a stable foundation is essential to create a happy and healthy life.

How Do We Build a Strong Foundation?

Let’s start with the fundamentals.  I teach my students and clients a relaxing, grounding meditation to help shape a safe and sturdy space to receive transformative energy.  The energy that I run helps prepare the physical body to receive, integrate and hold higher vibrations and energetic “upgrades,” allowing you to maintain a higher resonance and start attracting better health, wealth, relationships and happiness.

Here is a brief list of things that will help you create concrete improvements to your foundation:

Start With Small Adjustments

At the beginning of any new activity or routine, it is important to make realistic goals and start small. I know many of us are “all or nothing,” type people, however, it’s much more lucrative to ease your way into change. This prevents discouragement and promotes motivation.

Have you heard of the power of making your bed? This simple action starts a domino effect on your productivity.  If you make your bed in the morning, you’ve already accomplished your first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and encourage you to continue this energy into your day. This is a great example of a small adjustment leading to great success.

Establish A Morning Ritual

Small and early actions set the tone for the day. A morning ritual could be anything from enjoying a cup of coffee mindfully, doing a yoga routine, or even hitting the gym.  A morning ritual helps re-energize, builds focus, and helps to eliminate scattered energy.  My most favorite way of starting the morning is in gratitude.  Before you even get out of bed in the morning, give thanks for several things in your life, even if it’s just gratitude for being alive.  Say thank you, I love you.

Create daily, weekly, and monthly goals.

Setting goals helps trigger new behaviors. Goals help you align your focus and intention and guide you in the right direction.  Write your goals down every morning or the night prior.  Use a planner to create weekly tasks and action items. At the beginning of every month, identify what you would like it to look like.  Reflect once completed.  Understanding what it is that you are truly trying to accomplish will help you to reach your goals or purpose much more easily.

Self-Reflection

I teach my students and clients that they create their own lives, and everything is inside of them and NOT on the outside in material items.  An important part of changing for the better is understanding this; knowing that material things in life don’t matter when they realize that everything comes from within, and going inside themselves to review their lives and what patterns they will find that need to be cleared is a very necessary and fundamental place to start.

Reflection can be described as meditation or serious thought about one’s character, values, actions, patterns/habits, and motives, any of which will help you align with your highest self and greatest intentions.  You can pick whatever is right for you – journaling, meditating, affirming, visualizing, or just being mindful of your daily actions are all positive ways to start.

Take Care of Your Environment

If you are surrounded by clutter, you may find it harder to organize, remain focused, or be productive.  Cleaning your physical house assists clarity in your mental house quicker than you may think.  Create that clarity by organizing your surroundings and ridding your environment of what no longer serves you.  Clean it up – look at each item and decide what to do with it – if you don’t need it, file it, throw it out, or store items that you know you will need in the future.  This will create a clean, welcoming space in which you feel energized and motivated.

Self-Care

Get enough rest – listen to your body – when it tells you through fatigue, headaches, or feelings of stress, LISTEN.  It’s the only way your body can communicate that it has a need for some downtime.  Honor your body and treat it well.  Eat clean. Move your body; daily exercising or even just stretching can make you feel exceptionally good starting your day.  Any action that strengthens your body, mind, or soul is an act of self-care.  And talk nicely to yourself – none of this negative and debilitating talk, because trust me, your body does NOT like it and it won’t respond well over time.

The Bottom Line

At the beginning of any self-improvement effort it can be difficult to make lasting changes when you don’t have a level foundation. This is why it is so important to create habits, routines, and intentions. This is exactly what I teach and practice. I would love to help you build from the ground up.
